Who am I? I am From - a poem

I am from

I am from an island found in the Caribbean Sea

876, with the wind rush with Blue Mountain coffees

sugarcanes, exotic plants, and species

living exclusively in the cockpit country

long before Christopher Columbus discovered us

where the fusion of orange and yellow golden crispy sunshine covers the landscape

complemented by a tranquil climate

there is a natural mysticism blowing through the air

as the wind creeps on your skin

the cool, mysterious tropical breeze regulates

Birthing track and field Sprint kings and Queens

a place where three little birds song on my doorstep

Babylon releases chains

but they are still using their brains

emancipate yourselves from mental slavery. None but ourselves can free our minds

Many rivers to cross, no woman, no cry

the harder they come, the harder they fall

dancing to ska, vibing and drinking Jay Ray and nephew's white rum

I am the supercelestial spirit of my ancestors

Marcus Messiah Garvey Jr and Nanny of the Maroons

anti-struggle warriors who

were controlled by colonialism

making the most out of exploiting whilst greedy dogmatic enslavers

Had compensation regarding

the abandonment of slavery

the maroons had to fight for their existence daily

I am from

Out of many people; we are one

Yes, man, tiny, but we, Talawa, one, love Rasta

Irie reggae music, spices and herbs marinade the culture

beauty richly created by the hands of the beholder

Wrapped and presented like a gift in pure paradise

I am from

Nature, nature, nature, nature

The land of wood and water

In the voice of Thomas Thistlewood

“The best poor man’s country”
